Fir Farm submitted a response to the UK Government’s recent consultation on Improvement to Animal Welfare in Transport.
Key points were:
- More small abattoirs are needed in order to meaningfully reduce journey times for livestock travelling to slaughter.
- Proposed maximum journey times are too long and we recommend a much shorter maximum distance, particularly to slaughter.
- Centralised supermarket supply chains need to be addressed and livestock should be slaughtered wherever possible at their nearest abattoir.
