As a member of the Campaign for Local Abattoirs, we contributed to a briefing sent to Defra and published by the Sustainable Food Trust, which set out our suggestions for supporting small abattoirs during this difficult time.
Small abattoirs are vital for local meat producers and since the coronavirus pandemic there has been a sharp rise in demand for local food. However, many small abattoir owners are now struggling with staff shortages and biosecurity measures, coupled with the financial and regulatory pressures they have been experiencing for some time. We are therefore calling on Government to take action to address some of these challenges and provide urgent support to the sector.
