One of the UK’s ancient breeds, the Sussex is a red breed of beef cattle originally from south east England. Descended originally from the draught oxen used on the Weald of Sussex, they were selectively bred from the 18th Century.
We added a herd of Sussex to our farm in August 2020 and will manage them sustainably alongside our Red Polls, sheep and other livestock. Our cattle graze only on diverse, organic pasture, ensuring the health of the animal and the environment.
When these animals are fed a forage-only diet they provide much healthier meat for the consumer. Ruminants raised this way have been shown to contain higher levels of Omega 3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acids, beta-carotene and vitamin E.
Our Sussex cattle calve easily and unassisted and are highly maternal.
